Step 1

You’re almost done with this one! The first step on your path towards eating disorder recovery is to admit that you’re struggling and start looking for help and resources. You might have gotten to this point before. It takes a tremendous amount of courage to make these life-changing decisions, but trust us, you have never deserved recovery more than you do right now.

Since you’re already here, acknowledging your struggles and desiring change, the next step is to reach out to us by filling out a contact form. After submitting a contact form, someone from our Admissions Team will get back to you within 24-48 hours.

Step 2

After we receive your contact form, an Admissions representative will contact you via phone or email. They will arrange for a free phone assessment to make sure that treatment at ‘Ai Pono Eating Disorder Program is appropriate for you at this time.

If we are in fact the right fit, we will then request the necessary medical and insurance information to begin your admissions process. Upon receipt of your medical records, our Admissions Nurse will review your records to ensure that we can treat you safely during your stay with us.


Step 3

Once we receive the necessary insurance and medical information from you, the final step is yours to take.

It involves you making a commitment to the treatment and recovery process, getting yourself to our doorstep (we can help with that part too, don’t worry!), and once you do arrive, allowing us to be a part of your ongoing recovery journey.

We are so glad that you found your way here. We know that recovering from an eating disorder is difficult, but living with one is harder. We also know that 100% recovery is 100% possible and we have 35+ years of experience and dozens of successful recovery stories to prove it.

+ What is the standard length of treatment?

At 'Ai Pono Eating Disorder Program, we develop individualized treatment plans for each of our residents. The average length of stay is 45-60 days at the residential level of care and most patients opt to stay for our PHP program which is limited to a maximum length of stay of 6 weeks.

+ How do I know if I am eligible for the residential level of care?

We are currently able to offer our residential treatment program to patients of 13 years of age and older, based on your medical assessment and needs for care. During the phone asessment, the assesor will be able to provide appropriate recommendations regarding level of care.

+ Is treatment at 'Ai Pono very expensive?

Despite the higher costs associated with living in our island paradise, the residential program at ‘Ai Pono Maui is competitively priced. As a fully licensed treatment center, we will work with all major health insurance carriers on your behalf to secure coverage for your treatment. Typically, insurance will cover from 60-90% of the cost of care. We are also happy to work out convenient payment plans over a maximum period of six months.

+ What is a typical day in treatment like?

We begin with breakfast and a mindful walk. This is followed by ‘therapy process’ or ‘life skills’ groups prior to lunch. After lunch are ‘food and feelings’, and ‘body awareness’ groups followed by individual therapy and personal time prior to dinner. Evenings are spent in specialized groups that may include art therapy, story circle, and inspirational films and discussion. We also include time for outings, visitation, and organized activities throughout the week.

+ How many other patients will be there? Will I have to share a room?

Our census varies, but the maximum number of patients is eight. It is highly likely that you will be sharing a room because. We know that eating disorders thrive in isolation and therefore feel that having access to ongoing support and accountbility is therapuetically benefitial.

+ How much will I have to eat?

Meal plans and caloric levels are determined on an individual basis taking into account a variety of factors including both physical and psychological concerns.

+ How do you address food allergies, preferences, and vegetarianism?

We are sensitive to each patient’s food issues and provide flexibility in our menus. We take into account diagnosed food allergies, blood sugar issues, and other dietary needs. We offer vegetarian choices, and work with patients to differentiate between food preferences and food restrictions driven by eating disorder thoughts. We are not currently able to accommodate vegan diets. Any allergies must be diagnosed by a medical provider with specific tests. Please contact a member of our Admissions team for more information regarding allergies and testing.

+ How do I get to your facility on Maui?

The Kahului Airport, Maui’s main terminal, is just a 10min. drive from ‘Ai Pono Maui, and we provide transportation to and from the airport. Non-stop flights are available to Kahului, Maui from various West Coast cities on Hawaiian, United, and Alaska Air. Flights are also available throughout the day from all major airports in Hawaii.

+ Do you accept insurance?

Yes! 'Ai Pono participates with a variety of insurance companies including Hawaii State Medicaid. Refer to more detailed information below, or contact our Admissions Team today so they can assist you with determining your individual eligibility and benefits. Please note: At this time we are unable to accept Medicare or out-of-state Medicaid. If you need referrals for treatment programs in your state, please contact your in-state Medicaid provider, or we may also be able to assist you with the referral process.

+ What should I bring (and not bring) to treatment?

What you should bring:

  1. Insurance and ID cards
  2. Name, address, and phone numbers of current therapists and doctors
  3. All prescribed and OTC medications you are currently taking
  4. Medical information regarding any allergies you have to medications, food, or other sources and any information regarding special needs
  5. Appropriate reading material
  6. Laptop, tablet, phone
  7. Nair or a depilator (razors are not permitted)
  8. Comfortable clothes for one week (you will have access to a washer and dryer to wash clothes and undergarments) Please bring no more than one suitcase
  9. A light jacket or sweatshirt as bedrooms have AC and tend to be cooler
  10. Shoes that are slip-on or that have Velcro closure (no shoelaces, belts, or drawstrings are permitted). Traditionally, in Hawaiian homes, shoes are not worn indoors. If you prefer, bring socks or slippers to wear while indoors.
  11. A traditional battery-operated watch. Smart watches are not allowed.

What you leave behind:

  1. Jewelry and other valuables
  2. Shoelaces, belts, drawstrings
  3. Knives, guns, or weapons of any kind
  4. Lighters, candles, illicit drugs, alcohol
  5. Outside food or beverages
  6. Glass items
  7. Scissors or other sharp objects
  8. Razors - for hair removal can use Nair or a depilator
  9. Clothing that might expose midriff, or clothing that is inappropriately tight or short.
  10. Lastly, please try to limit yourself to one suitcase. We have regular laundry service available and go on shopping excursions as needed.
